“Reitoi” were two lakes formed from sources in the western edge of the Mountain “Egaleo”, about 300 meters north of the coast and used to mark the borders between Eleusina and Athens. The north lake was dedicated to the goddess Dimitra, the second daughter of Persefone.
Earlier there were currents in the area by outflow sources, which were blocked and formed the lakes, probably in the classic times.
Residents in area of Scaramanga used to say that both lakes existed until the 1950s. The descriptions refer that the lakes were wetlands, with clear waters, full of fish, surrounded by reeds, where many birds had their nests. The north lake, known as “Kefalari”, was drained and banked. The south lake, Persefone, maintained until today, is known as Lake Koumoundourou and is located on the borders between Haidari and Aspropyrgos.
